Biography 

Dr. Kershner pursued his undergraduate studies with distinction at Boston University and received his Masters of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees with honors at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He completed his Internship in General Surgery, his specialty training in Ophthalmology at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson and was chief resident in Ophthalmology at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

He is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, subspecialty certified in Cataract and Refractive Surgery by the American Board of Eye Surgery, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Kershner is Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, IK HO Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Past Chief of the Section of Ophthalmology and nominated for Chief of Staff at Northwest Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona, Past Medical Director, Pima Medical Institute, Tucson, Arizona, Board Member, American College of Eye Surgeons, Member of the Editorial Boards of Outpatient Surgery , Refractive and Cataract Surgery Today, and Vision and Aging magazines, Past Chairman of the Anterior Segment Fellowship Program and Founder and Director Emeritus of the Eye Laser Center in Tucson, Arizona. Dr. Kershner presently continues his consulting, research and teaching and is President and CEO of Eye Laser Consulting in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Kershner has contributed to numerous health columns, and has been a featured guest on television and radio discussing the latest breakthroughs in eye microsurgery. He was the host of the popular weekly television series "Eye on Health." He has authored over two hundred scientific articles, contributed to twenty-one textbooks and is on the editorial board, reviewer and consultant to numerous scientific journals. 

Dr. Kershner has been active in research to develop new intraocular lens implants, is a pioneer in the development of new microsurgical techniques for cataract, refractive and glaucoma surgery and has developed numerous surgical instruments that bear his name.

He has been recognized by many national organizations for his volunteer efforts, including the Lions Club, Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, YMCA Century Club, Sabbar Temple, and Hawaii Eye Foundation. In addition to teaching other ophthalmologists in the United States, Dr. Kershner has been an invited speaker in Austria, Brazil, France, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, India, Canada, Mexico, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, South Africa, Holland, Australia, Czech Republic and Russia. He is the recipient of the Alcon Surgical Award for Achievement in Ophthalmology and has been honored for his teaching and surgical skills by the International Association for Training and Research in Ophthalmic Surgery in Stansstad, Switzerland, by Director General and Professor Svyatoslav N. Fyodorov of the Intersectoral Research and Technology Complex in Moscow, Russia, the Japanese Society for Cataract Research, and the Japan Intraocular Lens Implant Society, awarded the gold medal from the Indian Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society, the Maharshtra Ophthalmic Society, the Bombay Ophthalmologist's Association and awarded the IK HO Visiting Professorship of Ophthalmology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 1994, Dr. Kershner received the Republican Senatorial Medal of Freedom, the highest honor the Republican members of the United States Senate can bestow on a private citizen.  

In 1999, Dr. Kershner was an honored recipient of the Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Kershner is among a prestigious few to be selected for inclusion in the "Guide to America's Top Ophthalmologists" published by the Consumers' Research Council of America in Washington, DC., and is listed in Strathmore's Who's Who 2003-4 Edition. Dr. Kershner has been featured in articles in Newsweek, Men's Health, Family Circle and USA Today. In May of 2003, Newsweek magazine featured Dr. Kershner performing surgery with the Implantable Miniature Telescope in an article on frontiers in health and technology. In 2002, he was awarded a National Leadership Award presented by Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the House, on behalf of the United States Congress. Dr. Kershner was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni of the College of Arts and Sciences at Boston University, receiving this award at a special ceremony in May 2002.  Dean and Provost of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dennis D. Berkey, PhD stated "we are proud to honor Dr. Kershner for his contributions. This award is the highest honor bestowed upon our alumni for their commitment to alma mater and to society." In 2004, Dr. Kershner was invited to serve as Chairman of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Department of Biology at Boston University. Dr. Kershner is featured in the Highlights of Ophthalmology, Hall of Eminent and Leading Clinicians and Surgeons, an international program commemorating 50 years of ophthalmologist's contributions to humanity.
